my husbands aunt gave me some mecca ointment and i love it it works wonders for spot treatment for acne works on bug bites.. anything.... so i ran out and went in search for more... i went to 3 different pharmicies and at the 3rd one... they found the dealer... and it said discontinued, you CAN stil get it if you have the pharmicist make it for you... and it still works wonders and is the same ingredients..... list goes like this: for 20g, phenol .5%, camphor .5%, zinc oxide 1.25% its that simple, i had the pharmisist make me a lifetime supply lol

I am currently looking for Mecca, and with no luck.. no one here in BC know of it. What a shame!
It's more of a shame that they do not make it anymore.
I hope the makers of Mecca read and see these messages and start making this product again!! Please bring Mecca back.
Will pharmacist's really make it for you??
    What if they don't?
    Ted

Emma, I live in BC and had one of the Medicine Shoppe pharmacists mix some up for me using the proportions Melissa provided. I think he used a Vaseline base. The only difference is that Mecca used to have a yellow colour to it, but it smells exactly the same and it works!

I am a pharmacist who has been making Mecca for my family for years. We were so upset when they stopped manufacturing it, so I found the recipe and have made many batches. I use an aquaphor base. It doesn't look exactly like the original, but it smells just like it and works just as well.

A very interesting thread of comments.
I still have a container of Mecca Ointment that I have had since 1947. There is not much left and am anxious to get more. My wife thought it was just some "junk" medication that she found among my things and threw it out. Luckily I was able to rescue it.
I have yet to find anything that works better to heal cracks in dry skin.
If the formula (i.e. recipe) is available, please let me know what it is. The container I have indicates that it contains .45% phenol, but nothing else is listed. The container is 3/4 oz.
    Thanks.

WOW ! I thought I was the only one that knew this product was a godsend. I contacted the company a few yrs. ago when they began to remove it from the stores. They claim sales were poor so they pulled it. The only reason sales were poor is that they didn't market it. If people knew how great this stuff was, it wouldn't have been able to stay in stock. I would have bought years worth if I knew that they were discontinuing it. :(

HURRAH! I am not the only one. I miss this stuff greatly.
I am going to try getting a pharmacist here to make it for me..

Will see how that pans out.

    :)

What we need is someone with the resources.. to invest in a new company and make it for us all! :)

I grew up using Mecca ointment; my parents swore by it. I still have a couple of tins from their house. I'd love to get some new Mecca, or at least have Ginger's "recipe". I will try to have some made up from the ingredients discussed here, though. I'd be thrilled to join any movement to get Mentholatum (it used to be in Fort Erie, Ontario) to start making it again!

My father-in law is a chemist and has been producing his own since they quit making it several years ago. We are considering marketing it under a new name, as it is great stuff, and many people are always asking for it.

My grandfather introduced me to Mecca when I was a little kid and had fallen and scrapped my knee pretty badly.
He told me that they used it during the war on wounds etc . That is a strong testimonial right there to the amazing healing qualities of this cream. I agree that poor sales was the result of no marketing tactics. What a shame.

I too miss using Mecca Ointment. I also agree that it was a large mistake to close business. Ever hear of advertising. I know for a fact that this product was supreme in quality. I once had a collie dog that had it's neck torn apart by a mob of other dogs. My father wanted to shoot it because we had no vet anywhere near our community. Mom said to let her try. The cords in its neck was showing. Every day mom bathed the wound and applied a thick layer of Mecca over the wound. My dog lived, and the hair grew back, you'd never guess what had happened. Nothing works like it. There was and is no competition in my eyes. Thankyou for the recipe, I definitely will look into it.

I actually contacted Mentholatum Canada (the original manufacturers) a few weeks ago about this, when I'd found out about this page. I got a reply, stating that, at present, there are no plans to start making Mecca Ointment again. Too bad, but I checked at the pharmacy; they will make it for me if I get a prescription from my doctor, but also said I could make it myself. I don't think so!!

THANK YOU for giving us back our mecca ointment - My father told me 60 years ago that mecca will cure a broken leg -maybe a bit of an exageration - however it healed whatever I had at the time and there were always at least 2 containers in my home. We have missed it terribly - I have a tin dated 2007 and I'm saving the little that is in it for severe conditions - and yes it still works - LOOKING FORWARD to the return of MECCA - THANK YOU a million times xo ruth

Been trying to heal a blemish over my lip which kept aggravating when I shave. Tried everything with no luck. I finally emptied my medicine chest and found the remains of a tube. No surprise,it's healing nicely now. The more of us who log into the meccaointment site, the more the company will be encouraged it has a great product. I'm really glad it's coming back.

Wow...what a great thread. We used Mecca in my family for many years because the doctor/pharmasist who originally developed it was a friend of my grandparents in Iowa. When it was in the first stages of development he was visiting my grandparents at a time when one of my uncles was about to loose his leg to gangrene...he asked the attending doctor if he could try the new salve he had just developed and was told to go ahead, it couldn't make it any worse...long story short, my uncles leg healed and he never lost it. I remember when they took it off the shelves in the 60's because the FDA made them...my mom bought all she could find at our local pharmacies and we kept it for years. I would love to know the recipe and will look forward to it's return! Meanwhile if any of you need an alternative I would highly suggest 'tea trea oil' for cuts, burns and boils or other infected sores.

I'm 57 and also grew up with Mecca ointment. I still have a small tin of it that I purchased probably 10 years ago. The other day I was telling a friend who had never heard of it about it and said I'd get some for him. Couldn't find it anywhere, googles it, and found this site. Glad I did! Hopefully it will be coming back on the market as mentioned.

Mecca is AMAZING!!!! My father introduced it to me when I was a little girl and now, all grown up and a registered nurse, I use it for everything! From burns, to cuts, to skin irritations, to the best diaper rash cream ever; you name it IT WORKS better than anything on the market. In fact, when my little brother skinned both elbows skate boarding we decided to do a little experiment. We put poysporin on one elbow and mecca on the other....the Mecca side healed DAYS before the poly side! I still have a small tin of it that must be at least 10 years old; It's treated like gold in my household lol. So very happy to hear that it's coming back!!!! :))

I grew up using the Canadian Mecca Ointment in the US, as we lived very near Niagara Falls. My grandmother was born there, but the rest of her family was Canadian, so we spent a lot of time in Canada. There was a difference in the version sold there and the one in the US, maybe that has to do with what someone earlier said about the FDA making them stop selling it here. In any case, I can't wait to buy the real thing again. I've been mixing my own from Zinc Oxide Cream and Campho-phenique, but it doesn't work the same.
