I had been taking "brand" Asacol - it is a delayed release mesalamine 400
Mg.
I switched to generic and was supplied Novopharm "NOVO-5-ASA". I do not see
anything on the label to indicate it is a delayed release capsule. Please
tell me if it is or not delayed release.

Hello Gwynne,
i suppose Novo-5 ASA tablets is delayed release in fact because these
tablets is enteric coated.

Asacol dissolves at a pH of 7.
Novo-5ASA dissolves at a pH of 5.5 (according to their own product
monograph.)
The difference is that the second product will deliver close to half the
dose into plasma (blood) where it is not needed. The first product will
deliver most of the drug into the colon. Canada is the only country in the
world with this product on the market. It is not a "generic" of any other
product.
