Sir: I am a 40-year+ user of Lowila. It has kept my hands and fingers "manageable". It appears that the product has been discontinued, and I badly need your commendation as to an alternative "soap substitute" which will, like Lowila, not irritate my all-too-sensitive hands. Your help is earnestly solicited, and thank you. Bob Hazlett

I've been using Lowila for almost 30 years and it appears to be discontinued. In my search for this product, it looks like you have been purchased by another company. Does the new company plan on reintroducing this product under a different name or different packaging? If so, can you please tell me the new name or the new expected release date. Thank you for your time.

up until a few years ago, i used lowila soap for about 30 odd years. then suddenly i could find it nowhere. it is the only soap that worked with my eczema. the rest make me breakout, even the oatmeal ones.
somebody had mentioned somewhere, that it was the boric acid in the soap and that it was toxic and could build up in your system, when absorbed through the skin. well i used it for decades with no ill effects ever!
whats going on, why can't i get it or something like it anymore???
please bring lowila back to ontario canada!!!

I have severe exzema on my hands and have been using Ultravate for many years to relieve the problem. I was told this product has been discontinued and it was very difficult to fill my last few prescriptions. I am totally out of it now and am not happy with the products the pharmacist has suggested as a replacement. What do you suggest. I really liked the consistancy of Ultravate and you didn't feel it on your skin after applying it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Susan Renouf

I want my Lowila Soap!
27 Dec 2009, 04:18
Now that it appears that Lowila is no longer being manufactured, has anyone found a suitable substitute? I've read comments from many former users and I was shocked how many depended on this product -- I thought I was alone.
I'm down to my last bar of Lowila and just tried to find some to order, without success. Since I'm late to the 'discontinued' parade I was hoping that other eczema may have already found a replacement.
Thanks

I too have been using Lowila soap for almost 40 years and have been unable to find it for months. I have sensitive skin which is reacting poorly to every substitute I have tried.
I find Bristol-Myers Squibb's failure to announce or explain its decision to discontinue Lowila disrespectful to its clearly loyal customers. The fact that Westwood-Squibb has steadfastly ignored direct queries about Lowila from faithful customers for five straight months is, frankly, arrogant and insulting.
To be honest, the company's behavior is so inexplicably contrary to good customer service principles I can't help but wonder whether there really was a health risk associated with use of Lowila and whether the company is now desperately trying to avoid lawsuits.
I welcome any information anyone has to share about the fate of Lowila, rumored health risks associated with it, and possible substitutes available currently.

Hello:
I can see that you have received numerous inquiries regarding Lowilla... where can it be purchased, why have you discontinued a fabulous product like this when there are sooo many loyal users. I was prescribed this product almost 40 years ago by my specialist and I have no idea what i can use that would provide me with the same gentle and loving care. Please make a suggestion or advise of any companies that may have purchased the item and will sell in bulk to my family and myself. Thanks for taking the time to read this request and responding. Susan.

I too am looking for Lowila soap. My understanding is that you sold this part of the company to Raxbury Pharmaceuticals and Raxbury has discontinued it's production (they say they can't find anybody to make the soap). Are you selling a comparable products? I've tried: Cetaphil Gentle Cleansing Bar and Basis Sensitive Skin Bar and both irritated my skin. I'm now using Aveno Moisturizing Bar and though it doesn't give me a rash like the others, my skin feels drier than with Lowila. Do you have a product or are you in the process of making a product similar to Lowila?

I am also looking for Lowila soap which I have used for 40+ years for my very sensitive skin. I have tried other cleansing bars and the other soap-free bars just do not compare to the gentleness of Lowila. It was discontinued about a year ago and I was frantic because I couldn't find it for about 6 months, but then they started manufacturing it again much to my relief. Now it's been discontinued again and I can't find it anywhere. This product has a very loyal customer base and so I hope the manufacturer will reconsider their decision to discontinue it.

Lowila was the only soap-like thing I've found that worked with my skin. Since production stopped, I've tried at least six substitutes, all of which were supposed to be hypoallergenic and all of which caused problems.

Please bring Lowila back, or at least make the ingredients public so that it can be duplicated.

I called Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals and asked them about the status of Lowila. They said they were discontinuing it. Their toll free number is 888-726-2299.
I was also told by the proprietor of a health food store that often when a company is bought out, the new manufacturer will often discontinue a product and then re-introduce it to the market in new packaging. I don't know if that's what Ranbaxy will do, but I hope so.

The unscented version of Aveno seems to be the only Lowila replacement that works for my skin. Finding it (thanks to "Lowila Lover" above) was a great relief. I've tried six other hypoallergenic cleansers and all of them caused irritation. Even after nearly two month's use, Aveno seems OK.

I have a friend that will soon be celebrating her 70th birthday. She has used Lowils soap since her teen years and for the last 10 years has looked to me for her birthday gift of the Lowila Soap bars. I normally purchase hera case at a time! I also grew up on Westwood-Squibb products and trust your judgement and suggestions. Please help soon.

I have also used Lowila for at least 35 years, and I am desperately trying to find more. Why oh why do these companies drop a product when it is so popular? It couldn't have been dangerous if so many people used it without harm. It was the only soap that would clean my oily skin without drying it. This is so depressing.

According to Ranbaxy's distributor AmerisourceBergen (800-759-8810) only their customers can request the Lowila soap. They would not give me specific customer name's, but their website mentions Good Neighbor Pharmacy. I found one locally and they called to order and were told it is not yet available.

I am a 30 year user of Lowila, and just recently found out about all the troubles obtaining it. This is all so very disappointing. Thank you everyone for being on top of this one. I live in Atlanta and the drug stores are not able to order Lowila. Apparently Hocks didn't realize the demand, because they appear to be out of stock. I would like to know how everyone feels about the "new" Lowila. Please keep me advised. Thanks.

Help may be on the way!!!!!! This week 8/20/10 I ordered remanufactured Lowila, Its called Lowila Care.
I've tried a cleansing bar called Sabamed it was ok but not good enough to replace Lowila. The remanufactured Lowila obviously doesn't have the same ingredients but appears to have similar ingredients. Lowila Care is soap free just like Lowila, I will post my opinion after I've used it for a while.

It is not controlling my eczema like the original formula. I may have to go back to Cetaphil. Has anyone found a suitable replacement for the original Lowila soap.

15 Sep 2010, 08:05
Somewhat repeating from a review listed on Amazon.com, this new Lowila from Ranbaxy (in a White/Blue/Red package) is nothing like the old Lowila (in a Yellow/Green/Red package) made by Westwood Squibb until about 2008. Both are called Lowilla Care.

They are different in smell, texture and chemical formula.

The old Lowila from Westwood-Squibb had a fairly hard texture. There was nothing else like it on the market (as far as I know). I used it for decades! Its formula was dextrin, sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, water, boric acid, urea, sorbitol, mineral oil, PEG-14M, lactic acid, dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, cellulose gum, and fragrance.

This new Lowila from Ranbaxy has a waxy/rubbery smell, and a soft waxy texture. Its formula is sodium cocoyl isethionate, stearic acid, maltodextrin, PEG-6, water, boric acid, PEG-4, urea, sodium chloride, mineral oil (or) paraffinum liquidum, and sorbitol.

The new one is very fragrant, made my eyes red (from the fumes) and made me sneeze. I would like the original product back, which I bought two cases at a time! How can the new product have the same name?
Susan

I used Lowila for 40+ years and was frantic to find a replacement. I find that Eucerin Gentle Hydrating Cleanser (unfortunately no bar cleanser available) is a highly satisfactory product that makes my super-sensitive, highly allergenic skin even more comfortable than Lowila did.

I did receive a bar of the new Lowila soap from Hocks. Unfortunately, it's nothing like the original which my wife and I had used for decades.

We still have a bar of the old Lowila to compare it against. The old Lowila had a rather neutral smell. The new Lowila is one of the worst smelling soaps we've ever used.

The old Lowila, as all know, was very gentle on the skin. The new Lowila leaves my face feeling ultra-dried out and unpleasant.

We've tried Eucerin and Cetaphil in the past and thought they were ok, but not as good as the old Lowila. I guess we'll try those again.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I posted a comment previously and have used Lowila for over 30 years. I have extremely sensitive skin. I haven't tried the new Lowila formula yet but the comments don't sound too promising. I was able to find a sensitive skin cleanser that I like almost as much as the "old" Lowila. It is by Boots (www.boots.com) called Expert Sensitive Gentle Cleansing Wash. I have only used it over the summer months and so far it has worked wonderfully, but the real litmus test will be this winter when my skin gets even more prone to dryness. Target carries it and it is very affordable. Hope this helps!

I also have used Lowila for over 30 years and I'm extremely disappointed it is not available. I started using it by my optometrist's advise to remove eye make-up, as I have sensitive eyes. Although I made an effort not to have Lowila get in my eyes, it did occassionly and did not sting or irritate my eyes. Do you know if Eucerin and Expert are safe for eye make-up removal. I appreciate any feedback.

Ordered the new Lowila from Hocks and, as others have stated, nothing at all like the original product. A major disappointment! Have since tried Neutrogenia bar soap, original formula. This works well if your facial skin tends to be oily and you need a good cleanser, yet does not irritate sensitive skin. All of the other gentle cleansers leave my skin too greasy. Good luck to all. A matter of trial and error to find best fit.

I started using Lowila Soap in the 1950's because of all my allergies including soap. I don't understand why they would discontinue making it when it is so beneficial to so many people

I don't know anything about soap-making, but I loved Lowila and have not found anything near its quality. I want to figure out how to make it, not just for myself, but for everyone on here, because I know EXACTLY how you feel.

I bought your PreSun sensitive sunblock SPF 28 with 16% Titanium Dioxide. I have used titanium sunscreens for years but this is the first one that is nearly impossible to wash off. Is it intended to be like this ? Of course, I have never before had one with this high % of titanium. It also makes me look like a 'mime' performer. I really don't like it. What can I do.

I, too, bought some of the new Lowila soap. What a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!! It smells nasty. It feels like a bar of Dove soap and it leaves a waxy, parafin-like residue on my skin (I suppose that's why RanBaxy can claim it doesn't dry out your skin). This bar is an imposter and is NOTHING like the old Lowila! Too bad RanBaxy decided to change the formula. The old Lowila was so beneficial to so many people with skin problems and allergies (myself included). The new Lowila SUCKS!!!

Used my last bar of Lowilla and have found nothing satisfactory to replace it. I had ordered large quantities in the past because it was so hard to find. If it were more readily available it may have been a better seller. Any plans to reintroduce the original formula? If so I would like to place an order.

My skin has been a nightmare without Lowila soap. If anyone finds anything comparable, please let me know. The new Lowila is awful and not even close to the original.

Hard to understand why this company would change a product like LOWILA that worked so beautifully & had such a loyal following.

Please bring back the ORIGINAL LOWILA!!!!!

"New: Lowilla is not up to par with the original. The original kept my skin clear as it peeled dead layers of skin after each wash. My face skin does not respond to the "new" formula in that same manner. As a result, I have had an in-grown hair pimple for over two-months which the orig formula would have cleared within week(s). I need to try something else. However, the reformulated bar(s)will not go to waste--I will keep my supply of "new" Lowilla formula to use as an overall body soap (it seems to work pretty well as a general cleanser).

Any suggestions for a different facial cleanser would be so helpful.
